Due to technological advances learning platforms have and will continue to change in the education realm as well as the corporate world. Shirky (2008) states that “Tagging” through the Internet, his example of Flickr, replaces planning with coordination. This statement translates to coordinating thoughts/items within the Internet is easier and more cost effective than creating or planning an institution that has a limit to what can be accessed. There is more “bang for the buck” when cooperation can be created into the infrastructure so that people can obtain what they need. Therefore, the cost of running an institution outweighs the cost of an infrastructure platform.
A cutting edge LMS that is geared towards new e-learning development is the Epsilen Environment. The LMS Epsilen has a feature of being able to create global networking by bringing together many groups to meet and communicate . Epsilen offers a lifetime membership which allows an individual to access their own ePortfolios even after leaving a company. This LMS is not limited to only accessing grades but it also allows educators to create assessments that can be taken Online. This program proves to integrate a few functions that are not yet evident with other LMSs.
Some large corporations use a Semantic Web although the popularity is increasing on a daily basis. The overall concept of a Semantic Web is being able to intertwine data from various facets within each other. A Semantic Web will benefit an individual with his/her time and resources.

Nice work on summing it all up Collette. You did a fine job of giving examples of possibilities for CMS's. I too think this is great stuff and can assist us as facilitators to help people learn. What I did find interesting is how the reading has so many different directions, which makes it very exciting.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Collette. Your summary was well done. In tagging, one can see the stream of ideas as it materializes. This makes me think of administrators who often lack the skills to convey the "big ideas" created behind closed doors. Hmmm...wonder what would happen if more leaders operate this way?
ReplyDeleteCollette,
ReplyDeleteGreat summary. I believe that internet had changed the way many things operate, whether within corporate or educational environments. I think having access to your portfolio once you leave the company is a great asset to the employees and speaks highly about the company. The hard work put in for many years is stamped and can be accessed whenever needed. I think it is a beautiful thing.

ReplyDeleteCollette, I think the real potential for increasing the effectiveness of e-learning is in social networking and collaboration through cloud computing. It will be interesting to see where the future takes us.
Thank you Collette for bring Epsilen Environment to our attention. I agree with you that one of the exciting features is that your work remains accessible even after you have completed a course or degree. How many times in our professional careers and continuing education have we lost access to information after we have completed something.
